Gustav Theodore Holst was an English composer, famous for his orchestral suite The Planets. There were professional musicians in the previous three generations of Holst's family, and he was destined from his early years to follow the same calling.
On 27 September 2009, after a weekend of concerts at Chichester Cathedral in memory of Holst, a new memorial was unveiled. On it are inscribed Holst's dates, and an epitaph, taken from the text of The Hymn of Jesus, reading "The heavenly spheres make music for us".
Holst's birthplace has been opened since 1974 as a museum devoted to his life and times. It is devoted partly to Holst himself and partly to illustrating local domestic life of the mid-19th century.
